Extracts from official logs written by Captain Joseph Price on voyages between 1829 and 1854. The major part of the work is the official log of a voyage on the sailing ship Confiance 1852-1854, from Liverpool to Geelong, and return to London. The log to Geelong is interspersed with diaries written by 4 passengers. Includes notes from the transcribers and coloured maps showing routes taken, and information about Price. , The Early voyages of Price were initially as an apprentice, with most of those voyages to Canada. Then the voyages were as chief mate, with most voyages to European ports. He became captain at the age of 23 and his voyages were to S. America. He later purchased ships, and in 1852 travelled with his wife and 2 children. His 35th voyage was on the Confiance, which is the main subject of the work. It left Oct. 7 1852 with government assisted emigrants. Price’s official log contains information about winds; land passed; position; illness; births and deaths; ships passed; direction, etc. The passengers’ diaries are interspersed day-to-day with the Captain’s log. Their full diaries are in the State Library of Victoria. They describe the roll call; reading; singing; church services; poor food; burials at sea; fish and birds seen, including ‘grampus’ which sound like whales; a gale, and the sails used; airing bedding (the captain says the passengers won’t do anything themselves unless told to) ; lime juice served;, dancing on deck for married passengers, and on the poop for single women; passing the Athenian, with which they send letters home, and those on board gave them good news about the colonies; card-playing prohibited by the doctor; luggage coming up, and a lot of it mouldy; fire on board, but put out; Valentine’s day, and the single women exchanging letters with the sailors; a fight, and the participants were tried and the doctor acted as judge; red algae in the sea; the southern sky; arriving cape Otway and put into quarantine due to whooping cough and scurvy; sick passengers taken off into tents on shore; diary-writer Walker is included, and his son died and he describes the quarantine area of the beach; crewmen deserting; arriving in Geelong; some deserters brought to court. Return journey - briefer entries, and no passengers’ diaries - loading cargo; Callao (Peru) and to Queenstown and London. The latter portion of the log has unexplained long gaps in time. The log is followed by the passenger list to , + appendix with details of the ship and registration and ownership - list of births and deaths on the voyage + passengers’ testimonial to the Captain + 2 pages photocopied from the original handwritten log
